Why we don't block apps

The obvious answer to too much screen time is to take the screen away. Lock the apps, set a hard limit, make it difficult to cheat. It is a popular approach, and for most people it does not last.

Control that fights you

A blocker turns your phone into an opponent. The first time it stands between you and something you genuinely need, you override it. The second time, you uninstall it. The habit it was meant to change is still there, and now you have also learned that the tool cannot be trusted.

Awareness that works with you

Most overuse is not a decision. It is drift: one video becomes forty minutes because nothing in the experience marks the passing of time. What people need is not a wall but a mirror, something that makes the drift visible at the moment it is happening.

People don't need a wall. They need a mirror.

That is why our screen-rest app measures continuous use rather than daily totals, and why its signal appears on the screen itself rather than in a notification. It meets you where the drift happens, and it leaves the decision with you.

Respect as a design constraint

Building a tool that informs instead of controls is harder. It has to be precise, it has to be fair, and it has to earn the right to be on someone's phone every day. That is exactly the kind of problem we started OlwenTech to solve.
