Designing a signal you can't ignore

Every screen-time tool faces the same problem: the warning arrives at exactly the moment you least want to hear it. You are deep in a feed, the timer fires, and your thumb dismisses it before your mind has read it.

We spent a long time asking a simple question. What kind of signal does a person not dismiss?

Signals that live in the environment

The signals we respond to most reliably are not messages. They are changes in our surroundings: light fading at the end of the day, a room getting cold, a battery icon turning red. Nobody has to tell you to put on a jumper. You notice, and you act.

Our screen-rest app applies that idea to the phone itself. After a long stretch of unbroken use, faint lines start to appear across the display, similar to the ones you would see on a tired screen. Keep going and they multiply. Put the phone down and they fade.

The best interruption is one you don't have to read.

Why nothing is blocked

Blocking feels decisive, but it fails in practice. People need their phones for maps, calls, payments and work. When a blocker gets in the way of something important, it gets switched off, and it rarely gets switched back on.

The lines never stop you from doing anything. Every tap still works. Calls and navigation never trigger them. The signal informs, and you stay in control.

Designed to be trusted

A signal this visible has to be honest about where it comes from. One tap on the quick-settings tile confirms that the lines come from the app and lets you pause them, so nobody who borrows your phone ever mistakes them for real damage.
